AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award

Jeffrey V. Rosenfeld, MD, MS, IFAANS, accepting the AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award from 2017-2018 AANS President Dr. Alex B. Valadka during the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. AANS Best International Abstract

Annually, the AANS recognizes the best international abstract. This year the recipient of the AANS Best International Abstract Award was Yu Lei, MD, from Shanghai. Rajendra Shrestha, MBBS, PhD, from Arghatosh, Nepal, was the recipient of the International Travel Scholarship, which helps offset travel costs for an author from a World Bank designated country. Both presented their abstracts at the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans.

AANS International Symposium

Attendees of the 2018 International Symposium are shown standing behind the 105 flags that represent the home countries of the nearly 1,500 international AANS members. The 2018 International Symposium was held April 28-29, during the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. Over 50 speakers from 25 different countries contributed to the symposium, which featured six modules, including Stereotactic and Functional, Pediatric, Neurotrauma, Spine, Cerebrovascular and Trauma. The symposium is open to all registered attendees of the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.

AANS International Reception

Continental Association of African Neurosurgical Societies (CAANS) President Abderrahmane Sidi Said, MD, (2016-2018) and 2018 CAANS Congress President Muhammad Raji Mahmud, MD, at the 2018 International Reception held in the New Orleans Museum of Art. The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), led by Jesus Lafuente, MD, and CAANS were the collaborating societies at the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting.

AANS International Visiting Surgeon Fellowship

The International Programs Committee selects two recipients of the AANS International Visiting Surgeon Fellowship every year. Pratyush Shrestha, MBBS, MCh, from Kathmandu, Nepal, (center) was one of the recipients of the 2018 fellowship. He took full advantage of opportunities presented by the 2018 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans. He carried out his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic under the observation of Edward C. Benzel, MD, FAANS. The other recipient, Muhammad Riaz, MBBS, FCPS, MRCS, from Karachi, Pakistan, was at Louisiana State University under the observation of Anil Nanda, MD, MPH, FAANS.

Representing North American Neurosurgery around the World

The AANS is the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) continental society for North America. In August, AANS Past President Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS, led the WFNS North American delegation at the 2017 WFNS World Congress in Istanbul. International Programs Chair Kenan Arnautovic, MD, PhD, also attended on behalf of the AANS. Franco Servadei, MD, assumed the presidency of the WFNS.

In October, AANS President Alex Valadka, MD, FAANS, and EANS Ambassador Robert F. Spetzler, MD, FAANS, attended the 2017 EANS Congress in Venice, Italy. At this meeting, EANS leadership transitioned from J. André Grotenhuis, MD, PhD, IFAANS, to Jesus LaFuente, MD.
