WINS Breakfast: Angela Duckworth

Angela Duckworth shared some parenting advice during the WINS Breakfast. For her, the “hardest thing” is wearing so many hats.

She believes that parents teach children by modeling. Show success, but also show vulnerability and the ability to bounce back. While at times quitting may be the right decision, she strongly encouraged that parents never let kids quit on a bad day. When children want to join something, be clear about the commitment.

When asked for indicators of success, she shared that an applicant’s GPA is more indicative of success than SAT scores, because GPA shows sustained effort, which outweighs the variation in institutions. Another indicator of success can be seen in multi-year involvement and progress within a single focus. For example, if a candidate joined yearbook as a reporter freshman year, stayed active for all of high school and went on to assume the editor position during senior year, she would see that as an indicator of a candidate who is likely to succeed.
