AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award
Franco Servadei, MD, accepted the AANS International Lifetime Recognition Award from 2018-2019 AANS Past President Dr. Alex B. Valadka during the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. Based in Italy, Dr. Servadei has been leading worldwide efforts to improve neurosurgical education in his role as WFNS President.
AANS Best International Abstract
Annually, the AANS recognizes the best international abstract. This year the recipient of the AANS Best International Abstract Award was Abdelsimar Tan Omar, MD, from Manila, Philippines. Ashraf A. El Badry, MD, IFAANS, from Mansoura, Egypt, was the recipient of the International Travel Scholarship, which helps offset travel costs for an author from a World Bank designated country. Both presented their abstracts at the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego.
AANS International Symposium
Moderator P. David Adelson, MD, FAANS, asks speaker Santiago Portillo Medina, MD, from Argentina a question during the Pediatric Session of the International Symposium. The 2019 International Symposium was held April 13-14, during the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. Kenan Arnautovic, MD, PhD, FAANS, and Jacques J. Morcos, MD, FAANS, were co-chairs of the symposium, which featured six modules, including Stereotactic and Functional, Pediatric, Neurotrauma, Spine, Cerebrovascular and Trauma.
AANS International Reception
Colleagues had the opportunity to catch up with one another and celebrate the contributions of our international members at the 2019 International Reception. The Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons (AASNS), led by Basant K. Misra, MD, from India, and the Federación Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Neurocirugía (FLANC), led by Claudio G. Yampolsky, MD, IFAANS, served as the 2019 collaborating societies.

AANS International Visiting Surgeon Fellowship
The International Programs Committee selects two recipients of the AANS International Visiting Surgeon Fellowship every year. Ayodeji Salman Yusuf, MD, from Nigeria, (right) and Yannick Canton Keseely, MD, from Chad (left) were the recipients of the 2019 fellowship. Both took advantage of opportunities presented by the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego. Dr. Yusuf carried out his fellowship at the Ochsner Health System under the observation of Olawale A. R. Sulaiman, MD, PhD, while Dr. Kessely did his fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in Madison under Robert J. Dempsey, MD, FAANS.
Representing North American Neurosurgery around the World
Over the past year, the AANS was represented at three international society meetings. International Programs Committee Chair Kenan Arnautovic, MD, PhD, FAANS, attended the CAANS 2018 Congress in Abuja, Nigeria, in July. Below Dr. Arnautovic presents to attendees in one of the plenary sessions.
In October, 2018-2019 AANS President Shelley D. Timmons, MD, FAANS, FACS, along with AANS Ambassador Robert F. Spetzler, MD, FAANS, attended the 2018 EANS Congress in Brussels.
In November, Dr. Timmons and Jacques J. Morcos, MD, FAANS, represented the AANS at the 2018 CLAN Congress in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. At this meeting, FLANC leadership transitioned from Jose Marcus Rotta, MD, to 2018-2020 FLANC President Dr. Yampolsky.
